There's something special about getting up for sunrise while backpacking in the mountains. Walking through frosty meadows as deer and moose calmly graze, hearing the first songs of birds and the echoing mating calls of elk as they bugle in the distance. This was one of those mornings. I was out with my camera while the sun was still below the horizon, watching the world wake up as I was waiting for something to speak to me.

Over the years I have found that one of the most important parts of photography is to not have expectations, as any kind of goal or preconceived vision can cause you to try and force things to look a certain way and also blind you to other opportunities that my present themselves. Instead, I try to listen to the light and let it dictate what I photograph according to what it illuminates within the landscape.

I wandered through a grove of trees and on the other side I came to the bank of this curving, gentle stream leading into the lake behind me. A few moments later, the sun came up from behind the trees and mist started to rise from the cold stream as it was hit by the warm sunlight. I raised my camera to my eye, composed this scene, and pressed the shutter. It's moments like these where I feel like instead of looking for scenes I am led to them. You just have to be listening to the light and it will tell you what to photograph.
