I have been fortunate enough to live in Utah for the last 8 years now where I have had access to the endless canyonlands of the desert southwest. In these narrow canyons deep within the earth, I have found some of the most remarkable scenery I have seen in all of my travels. Ancient rivers and flash floods have created sandstone labyrinths that surpass even the most incredible architectural feats of man. The lighting created by these curving sandstone hallways has a quality that can't be replicated anywhere else on Earth.

This particular canyon is located in the Escalante National Monument, which was dismantled by our government at the beginning of 2018 and divided into three smaller monuments in order to once again give access to corporations to mine for uranium and coal and drill for oil. Obviously, these industries would scar and even destroy the land forever, so I was devastated as soon as I heard about these plans. I started traveling to Escalante as often as I could, hiking and backpacking into different areas hoping to create photographs that would show the world why it was a place worth protecting.

After many protests and petitions by people that love nature and wish to keep it intact, the government is now working to reverse the action and restore the original boundaries which will continue to protect this remarkable place from harmful industries. That incident really shaped my motivation as a nature photographer, and my travels are now fueled by the hope that I can teach people the value of the last few wild places we still have left in their pure, unaltered state.
