Autumn in Zion
Dates: October 29 - November 3, 2018 (5 Days)
Location: Zion National Park, UT
Group Size: Maximum of 6 Participants
Skill Level: Photographers of All Skill Levels Welcome
Difficulty: We will be hiking 3-5 miles into the Virgin Narrows wading through cold, running water for at least one of the days. Most of the other places we will be shooting are near the road or just a short hike no more than 1 or 2 miles at most. Temperatures should be relatively mild, it is rare that they drop below 40F this time of year. Participants may camp with us inside the national park or there are plenty of hotels and places to stay in Springdale. However, if you do decide on lodging outside of the park, you will be responsible for your own transportation into the park to meet us at the visitor center each morning to catch the shuttle.
There are few places more beautiful to shoot fall colors than the American Southwest, and Zion is arguably one of the most stunning locations of the area. Its enormous, red canyon walls, striking peaks and towers, and the virgin narrows provide for incredible light all day long and some amazing photo opportunities. TJ Thorne and I decided on this location because of its great potential for imagery. This is a workshop that will consist of little downtime, as we will be plenty occupied with lots of different scenes and unique light all day long.
For our 4 day long workshop we will be catching the shuttle for sunrise each day to get the first light as it hits the canyon walls and begins to spill down and illuminate the yellow cottonwood and red
maple trees. This is a workshop that will consist of capturing both grand landscapes as well as learning the art of more intimate photography that the Fall season lends itself so well to. TJ and I hope to teach you how to adapt to light and find beautiful scenes at all times of the day by paying attention to details and organizing your surroundings in a creative way.
The meeting point for our workshop will be at the Zion National Park Visitor Center at Noon on October 29th. We will have a small discussion and itinerary review in the picnic area and then take off to shoot the evening light from there. The locations we decide to shoot will be dictated by the weather and lighting conditions of each day. The workshop will end after sunset on November 3rd. Anyone that decides to camp with us is welcome to stay that night but we will be need to check out by 11am the following morning.
