Sometimes the chaos and stresses of life can feel like too much to bear. This is when I feel called by wilderness the most–the only place we can still find true solitude, space, stillness, and silence.

On one afternoon I was wandering barefoot on the endless sand dunes of Death Valley National Park. It was new years eve, and I was contemplating all of the things I had done that past year. I sat atop a large dune for a while and soaked in the peaceful scenery as the sun was setting. Without many clouds in the sky, there wasn't ideal light or atmosphere to be creating photographs. I kept my camera packed away in my bag and just enjoyed the view. After the sun had dropped below the horizon, the landscape began to lose its warmth and took on cooler pastel shades of blue. The soft light hid the busy textures and began to accentuate the larger lines and ridges in the sand dunes.

I noticed this beautiful, perfect 'S' shape of one of the dunes in front of me. While it was a very simple scene without too much going on, I really connected with it in that moment. Photography for me has become much more than just capturing 'epic' sunrises and sunsets in grand landscapes. It has become a mindful practice, a way to carefully study the land around me and see the shapes, patterns, designs, and arrangements that so many others fail to notice.
